History
The Metropolitan On Main is not just a restaurant; it’s a piece of Dallas history. Our building at 2032 Main Street, located in the heart of the historic East Quarter, has seen decades of fascinating stories unfold within its walls. Decades ago, this very location housed the only Western Union office serving downtown Dallas. This office was a hub of communication in the early-to-mid 20th century, providing critical services to the people of Dallas, including some of its most infamous figures.
One of the building's most notable historical connections is to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. After JFK's tragic death in 1963, Jack Ruby, the nightclub owner who later killed Lee Harvey Oswald, sent a telegram from this very Western Union office shortly before the events that would etch his name into history. This link to such a significant moment in American history has made 2032 Main Street a place where the echoes of the past are still felt today.
But the stories don’t stop there. Going back even further, our location holds a connection to the notorious outlaws Bonnie and Clyde. During their crime spree in the 1930s, this Western Union office played a role in relaying critical information, as they navigated their path through Texas. The building stands as a silent witness to the days when these infamous fugitives were making headlines across the country.
At The Metropolitan On Main, we embrace our rich historical heritage while offering a modern and sophisticated experience. Our art-deco-inspired decor pays tribute to the building's storied past, and our menu celebrates both tradition and innovation. Here, history comes alive, blending with the contemporary charm of downtown Dallas.
